The story behind
I used to think ham and cheese sandwiches were boring until I discovered this French masterpiece. It totally redefines comfort food for me. It dates back to early 19th-century French bistros, where the egg on top was said to resemble a woman's traditional hat. It's my absolute favorite choice for a lazy mid-day meal when I want something that feels fancy but is secretly very straightforward to make. Pair it with a crisp mimosa or a hot latte to bring that genuine cafe experience right into your kitchen.
Instructions
-
1Melt the butter in a pan and toast the bread slices on both sides until beautifully golden brown.
-
2Build the sandwich by adding a handful of shredded cheese and the ham slices between the toasted bread.
-
3Place the sandwich on a baking sheet, spread the warm bechamel sauce over the top piece of bread, and sprinkle extra cheese.
-
4Broil in the oven for a few minutes until the topping is bubbly and slightly browned.
-
5Fry your egg in a separate pan, keeping the yolk soft. Slide it on top of the melted sandwich and finish with a sprinkle of fresh chives.
