The story behind
Hey! Seeing these tequeños instantly makes me happy. There's a famous saying in Venezuela: 'A party without tequeños isn't a party at all.' I remember the first time I made them; it was a mess wrapping the cheese, but the result was so worth it! They are said to originate from Los Teques, a city near Caracas, and they've since conquered hearts worldwide. They are the perfect afternoon treat or a great appetizer for any gathering. I love serving them with a creamy garlic sauce or guasacaca. Pair them with a cold soda or a light beer for the best experience. You're going to love them!
Instructions
-
1In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, egg, and butter. Slowly add warm water while kneading until the dough is smooth and doesn't stick to your hands.
-
2Let the dough rest covered for about 20 minutes.
-
3Cut the cheese into sticks, roughly 3/4 inch thick and 2 inches long.
-
4Roll out the dough very thin and cut it into long strips about 3/4 inch wide.
-
5Wrap each cheese stick with a dough strip, overlapping the edges and making sure the ends are tightly sealed so the cheese doesn't leak.
-
6Heat the oil in a deep pan and fry the tequeños until they are beautifully golden and crispy all over.
